Algeria coach Abdelhak Benchikha has resigned from his post in the wake of his side's heavy 4-0 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier loss to Morocco on Saturday.

The 47-year-old Benchikha was appointed as head coach of the Algerians in September 2010 when he replaced Rabah Saadane, but he never really got things going for Les Fennecs.

Algeria surprisingly lost their first official match under Benchikha as Central African Republic proved to be too strong in October 2010. Benchikha then guided Algeria to a 1-0 home win over Morocco in March, but he has now lost faith that he will be able to guide the Algerians to the Africa Cup of Nations following Saturday's loss.

The north Africans currently sit fourth in their group with only four points from four games.

Benchikha previously coached clubs in his homeland Qatar, Tunisia and the Algerian Olympic team
