Women footballers show Nigeria how it's done

Zoom They have won seven of the eight African championships so far, have been to every World Cup since 1991 and have qualified for the past three Olympic Games.
Now Nigeria's senior female footballers take on some of the world's giants hoping to bring the women's World Cup to Africa for the first time.
The Super Falcons are drawn in a tough opening round group against defending champions and hosts Germany, Canada, and France - their first opponents in Sinsheim on Sunday.
As their male counterparts wallowed in shame after a string of poor showings last year, the female players showed Africa's most populous country and overwhelmingly male-dominated society, how it should be done on the pitch.
Segun Odegbami, ex-captain of the men's team, the Super Eagles, says the Nigerian women excel in "anything that requires energy and speed" because "genetically they are physically stronger, very athletic and generally industrious".
While the Eagles crashed out in the first round at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa last June amid scandals, the women were busy recording impressive successes.
The junior female squad, nicknamed the Falconets, became instant celebrities having left home almost unnoticed only to return to a rapturous welcome after becoming the world's second best women team behind Germany at the FIFA Under 20 World Cup.
The cadet team, the Flamingos also sailed through in the FIFA Under 17 Women's World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago last year narrowly missing their semi final ticket to Korea.
While they have not won an international championship yet, the women have become a source of pride for Nigeria.
The Super Falcons "are like the only thing we have out of 150 million Nigerians," remarked Bola Jegede, a club owner and pioneer of women's football in Nigeria.
"It's true, they are ones that are bringing smiles to over 150 million Nigerians."
Women's football "is the best story recorded" in 2010, says Henrietta Ukaigwe, a football administrator and leader of Nigeria's Female Football Interest Group.
It was the Falcons that first qualifed for a World Cup in 1991 before the male team the Eagles made it in 1994.
Despite the good showing, the females have not been fairly treated compared to the the males. Jegede says where men get a $10,000 match bonus, the females get $2,000.
Coach Eucharia Uche says unequal rewards have not dampened their spirits. "The women are committed and determined even in the face of little remuneration and compensation," said Uche.
"Although not highly motivated (financially), the women have always done very well because they are committed," said Ukaigwe,
Veteran sports writer Harry Awurumibe said the "girls have the pedigree...only if they are given even half of the welfare given to the men, these girls will propel."
"When the boys are playing they (administrators) will charter planes to carry supporters but when it's the girls playing, to God be the glory," said Jegede.
Some observers see male professionals, most of whom have lucrative contracts with European clubs, as more loyal to their foreign clubs. "Men play more for their foreign clubs than for their country," said Ukaigwe. "The problem with the men is attitude. They lack the right attitude and character," said Garba Lawal a former Super Eagles player.
"Maybe the men feel they have arrived but the girls still want to make a mark, they want to be recognised," said coach Uche.
Against the odds, around a dozen female professionals have won contracts with overseas clubs and one of them is striker Perpetua Nkwocha, who is with Sunnana SK of Sweden.
While the Super Falcons are one of just seven countries to have played in all five previous editions of the women's World Cup, they have only advanced out of the group stage once.
Goalkeeper Precious Dede said the Falcons have been awaiting a fresh chance to soar higher and achieve "something better at the world stage". "This is the time to go out there and show our stuff," she declared.

Despite going behind twice, Côte d'Ivoire came back to beat Denmark 4-2 behind an outstanding four-goal show put on by Souleymane Coulibaly. The silky-skilled forward had a hat-trick by half-time and put the match out of reach in the second period with a top-drawer individual effort. The win at Estadio Guadalajara moves the Africans into second in Group F, with a good chance of reaching the Round of 16, while Denmark need to make up serious ground in the last round of matches.
Coulibaly scored in the Baby Elephants 2-1 loss to Australia to open the FIFA U-17 World Cup, and his five goals now lead the tournament. Kenneth Zohore and Viktor Fischer gave the Danes their first goals of the event - they lost 3-0 to Brazil to start - but their defence had no solution to Coulibaly and the fine movement of the Ivorians.
