African goalscorers in Europe: 21-22 May | |
FRANCE The league's top scorer Moussa Sow took his tally to 22 goals in a 2-2 draw with Paris Saint-Germain, which saw Lille crowned champions for the first time in 57 years. Senegal's Sow was not the only African who was instrumental in Lille's successful title campaign, with Ivory Coast striker Yao Kouassi Gervinho also chipping in with 15 goals this season. Guinea striker Larsen Toure found the back of the net for Brest in the 63rd minute as they beat Auxerre 1-0 away. Ghana midfielder Andre Dede Ayew equalised for Marseille just one minute after Algeria's Foued Kadir had given Valenciennes a 33rd minute lead. Senegal midfielder Remi Gomis later equalised for Valenciennes to ensure both sides shared the points after drawing 2-2. Cameroon striker Benjamin Moukandjo Bile scored the only goal of the game to help Monaco sustain hopes of avoiding relegation. Monaco can still avoid relegation if they can win their final league game against Lyon next weekend. But they will also have to rely on six other teams getting results that would favour them. Gabon striker Eric Moulougui scored in the first and 16th minutes to wrap up a two-goal victory for Nice, who beat Lorient. Another Gabonese, Pierre Aubamayang, was on the scoresheet after a seventh-minute equaliser for Saint Etienne, who lost 2-1 to Sochaux. Nigeria's Ideye Brown scored both goals for Sochaux. Mali midfielder Bakaye Traore scored the opening goal for Nancy, who beat Rennes 2-0 away. SPAIN On the final day of the Spanish season, Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor made sure of not missing out on Real Madrid's 8-1 goal-fest victory over Almeria. Adebayor scored a hat-trick, while Nigeria striker Kalu Uche's goal was scant consolation for Almeria. Frederic Kanoute also signed off the season with a the goal for Sevilla, who beat Espanyol 3-2. The Mali striker finished the season with a total of 12 goals - the top African scorer in La Liga. Pierre Achille Webo scored Mallorca's third goal in added time, but it was not enough as his side lost 4-3 to visiting Atletico Madrid. Mallorca barely survived relegation, finishing just above the drop zone. ITALY With AC Milan already crowned champions, the season came to a close at the weekend. Only one African found the back of the net as the battle for places in European competitions and relegation were decided. Guinea striker Kevin Constant scored his second goal of the season for Chievo who were 3-1 winners over Palermo. TURKEY Joseph Yobo put his signature to Fenerbahce's 18th league title in his side's 4-3 win at Sivasspor on Sunday, on the final day of the season. The Nigeria defender scored one of the goals in a thrilling encounter as their rivals for the title Trabzonspor were comfortably beaten 4-0 by Karabukspor. Both sides finished on 82 points but Fenerbahce triumphed in a head-to-head record. Elsewhere, Senegal striker Victor Mendy scored for Bucaspor in the first half of his side's 3-3 draw with Kayserispor. ENGLAND Cameroon midfielder Somen Tchoyi scored a hat-trick for West Bromwich Albion, who staged a dramatic comeback from three goals down to draw 3-3 at Newcastle United. All of Tchoyi's goals came in the second half. Benin midfielder Stephane Sessegnon was among the goalscorers for Sunderland who hammered already relegated West Ham United 3-0. related bbc links: ![]() related internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites |
