2012 Afcon qualifying round-up: Senegal qualify for African Cup of Nations, Mali top group with victory over DR Congo

following  the fifth round of the 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifying, with a number of matches taking place throughout the weekend

Senegal 2–0 DR Congo
The Senegalese players knew going into this match that a win at home against DR Congo would be enough to secure their place at the 2012 African Cup of Nations competition in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

For Senegal it was none other than Moussa Sow who took personal responsibility for his side's Afcon fate by scoring the opener in the first half.

The lethal attacker was at it again after the half time break, scoring his second of the match to make life even more difficult for the visiting Congolese.

The match ended 2-0 in favour of the Teranga Lions, thus confirming their spot in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea at next year’s African Cup of Nations.
Mali 3–0 Cape Verde
The Malians secured an important win over their Islander counterparts which puts them at the summit of Group A, after leapfrogging their opponents and reaching nine points in the table, two above Cape Verde.
The first half saw Mali race to a 2-0 lead thanks to a brace from Cheick Diabate, and with the score in their favour at half time, the Malians were the more confident side going forward, causing constant problems for the visitors.
In the second half the home side put the one beyond doubt with a third goal, as Mahamand Traore gave the fans in Bamako yet another reason to be pleased with the performance.
The result means that Mali now have their fate in their own hands, as Zimbabwe and Liberia cannot catch them after Sunday’s game and they will go into the final game of the round in October as group leaders, knowing that a win away in Liberia will guarantee qualification for Afcon 2012.

Libya 1-0 Mozambique
Libya beat Mozambique 1-0 on Saturday evening in Cairo, Egypt to move two points clear at the top of the Group C standings, but second-placed Zambia play the Comoros on Sunday, so that lead is likely to change once again.

The Libyans played with a changed kit and sang a new national anthem before the start of the encounter, and perhaps the winds of change inspired them, as they came out guns blazing and found a goal through Rabe Alafi to secure all three points for Libya.

Libya travel to Zambia in their final qualifier in October, and this sets up a very interesting last round with the Chipolopolo looking to stay ahead of their north African rivals to qualify for Afcon 2012.

Namibia 1-0 Gambia
Namibia hosted Gambia in Group F, with both sides forming part of the only three-team pool in the qualifiers. The match was goalless until the final few minutes when the home side snatched a goal and their first points of the campaign, through a strike from Tangeni Shipahu in the 83rd.

With time running out Momodou Zico Ceesay had an appeal for a Gambian penalty, but the referee waved play on. The home win puts the southern Africans on three points, tie with Gambia.

The result means that Burkina Faso, on nine points with a game against Gambia to go, earn mathematical qualification for next year's African Cup of Nations competition by virtue of the fact that they are six points away from their closest challengers.

The Taifa Stars welcomed the Fennecs to Dar es Salaam with both sides knowing that a win would still give them a chance in the final round of qualifying from Group D, while the loser would no longer be able to achieve their 2012 Afcon aim. It was Tanzania who would score first in the match, with Mbwana Samata putting the home side in the lead.
Jan Poulsen’s charges did well to keep the lead going into half time, but in the second half it was the turn of their north African visitors to find their scoring boots, with an equaliser coming courtesy of Hameur Bouazza.
The game would end in a stalemate, with neither side benefiting as only one point goes to each nation, meaning that they both remain tied on five points.
In fact, the result is a positive one for the other two teams in the group, Morocco and Central African Republic, who are tie on seven points and set to battle it out against each other on Sunday.
